I dismissed the first three records in large part due to the lyrics. Still what is here speaks to me so much clearer. The whole record is cohesive, but I guess I could admit it’s lacking singles as memorable as Purple’s, in particular. I just don’t see how everything they did before is not done even better here the rock riffs, the fun eclecticism, the ballads, Scott’s lyrics, everything is just very well honed by now. I know most folks love their previous 3 records more, and I get that. I Got You, Sour Girl, Atlanta, Glide all of them pushing the boundaries of the band’s sound, but every approach works and the material is strong and deftly executed on record with classic pop touches. In some ways it’s less adventurous than Tiny Music, but in other ways it’s not.
